29th Annual Green Race – November 2nd, 2024

The level of destruction on the Green River as well as many watersheds of the Southeast is heartbreaking. The sights and sounds of this flood are impossible to describe.  Watching houses on fire floating through our festival site was not on anyone’s bingo card.  While many homes and countless cars were swept away, miraculously everyone who lived in the cove survived.

Unfortunately,  the road that allow vehicle access to the lower Green River have been washed out from both above and below, but are currently getting repaired.  The powerhouse that controls releases through the Narrows was partially destroyed by a landslide.  Lastly our beloved Green River Narrows has changed completely.  We’re not writing a new chapter here, it’s a new book.

In light of all this our primary goal for 2024 is to raise funds to restore the Green River and have a get together to start the healing process.  We can’t let this hurricane take anything else away from us. The Green Race Conservation Project is raising funds with a primary focus of restoring the river.

We were hoping to have a race but we are pivoting our focus to a film premiere, festival and fundraising. Being that the powerhouse is shut down, we are dependent on rain to have water in the river. Unfortunately due to no rain since the hurricane and no rain in the forecast for the next 2 weeks – racing is not an option.  Instead we will use Saturday, November 2nd as a river clean up day.

We will be streaming Saturday live from 12PM-3PM for Free on Youtube. The live show include a live geology presentation from geologist and Green Race-Philip Prince, How the Green River Changed My Life Video Contest, live coverage of in the field clean up action, commentary about past, present, and future Green Race, and live artist demonstrations such as paintings and stain-glass.

Green Race Conservation Project and raising money to restore the Green River.

Through the Green River Conservation Project (GRCP), we will focus on restoring the Green River by removing debris, rehabilitating the stream bed, repairing its banks, and improving access points. Funds raised will help cover the cost of large equipment rentals and debris removal for this effort.

As well, having lived in Green River Cove during the flood, rescued friends and neighbors, and supported our community through the aftermath, we deeply understand the profound impact this storm had on river communities. Sadly, this story is echoed throughout the Southeast. We intend to tell this story through our film project, The New Dawn.

With powerful storytelling, we will chronicle the emotional and physical toll these communities endured, highlighting their resilience as they rebuild and find hope again. The restoration of the river environment, the river community, and the river economy will be nothing short of historic.

Please consider supporting this important project.
